Celebrate the freedom

June is the official month of Pride, in which lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) individuals come together to celebrate the freedom to be who they are, love who they choose, and express themselves freely. There is a place for everyone during Pride month who shows support and understanding of those who may be different. Allies are welcome to celebrate and given an opportunity to observe, listen, learn, and most importantly to show support to the LGBTQ community.

The LGBTQ community is made up of many individuals with layers of marginalized identities. Those who support the LGBTQ community and consider themselves allies, understand the importance of using their platforms to amplify not only queer voices, but Black queer voices, trans people’s voices, and other individuals with layers of marginalized identities.

Enhancing awareness of and support for the LGBTQ community should not be limited to June. It is important to create safe and inclusive spaces for LGBTQ individuals throughout the year. A recent Gallup poll shows that U.S. adults who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or queer has risen from 4.5% in 2017 to 5.6% in 2020. This increase likely speaks to the sense of safety and social support LGBTQ individuals increasingly feel.

At CMA, we hope it also communicates the increasing need for organizations to begin or continue supporting LGBTQ individuals, as it is increasingly likely that current and future employees will identify as a member of this community.

Organizationally and individually, what actions you are making to support the LGBTQ community? What more can you do? It is a moral and business imperative for corporations to foster an environment that is diverse, equitable, and inclusive to all individuals.
